THAT SHOULD BE ME
By Virginia Asenath
We had our lunch there and I stood to go back to class but he pulled me back to his laps.
‘My mum would be angry that I didn’t attend classes,’ I pleaded.
‘Are you planning to tell her?’ he asked with a smirk.
‘What time will I go to class?’
‘Ten minutes to the end of the last lesson,’ he said brushing through my hair.
‘But…,’ I tried to speak but he blocked my lips by kissing.
‘Say another word and I kiss you again,’ he said.
‘Whatever,’ I said and rolled my eyes.
I rested my head on his chest as he cuddled me. I feel like sleeping but I dare not because am in school.
‘I love you and I want you to be my girlfriend,’ he said brushing his fingers through my hair.
‘I love you to, though you are strange,’ I said genuinely and he chuckled.
‘I’m not strange, I just don’t like showing myself,’
‘Tell me who you are then?’
‘I will tell you, I’ll also show you all my assets and what I do. This isn’t the right place or time,’ he said and I nodded.
‘The first day I came to the restaurant, instead of Lily you didn’t seem concerned. Why?’
‘I loved you from the first day we met but Scot also loves you. I wanted to forget you and move on and decided to date your sister. I took her there first and she insulted me. After a while she forgave me and wanted to make things right and I arranged the date. I was happy when you came because I wanted you and not her,’ he said and I just smiled. We talked about random things and it was fun.
‘Take this,’ he said handing over the bracelet he had to me.
‘It’s nothing, just make sure you have it on you,’ he said and I nodded.
I stood to go back to class.
‘Will see you later,’ I said after disengaging from the hug.
‘I love you,’
‘I love you to,’ I said and left.
THAT SHOULD BE ME
I was locked up in the cell and the room was terrible. I sat on the small spring bed in the room and it couldn’t even handle my weight. This is where my selfishness has landed me. I wish I can see my dad, I miss him. I know he isn’t my biological dad but he raised me, he is the only one I know. He showed me love and covered up for me even when I was wrong. I want to ask for forgiveness because I don’t know when I will get out of here.
Two days later.
I had wrapped myself in the corner when the police came.
‘You have been released,’ he said opening the door.
Everyone smiles when they get out of this place but I can’t because I don’t have anywhere to go.
I walked into my room from yes bathroom and couldn’t see the picture Harry drew. I dressed casually and went downstairs. After checking around I didn’t see Lily and I think she has something to do with it. I went outside and she was there burning my picture.
‘What the hell do you think you are doing?’ I shouted and he just smiled.
‘Leave my picture alone,’ I yelled again and she threw it down still burning.
‘All this you are enjoying should be mine and that picture should be me. He asked me out and you took advantage,’ she said angrily and I stood there confused.
‘He asked me out and I rejected because I thought he was poor and you knew it was a lie and didn’t tell me,’
‘What do you mean?’
‘Harry draws houses for people and he drew this. Don’t ask me how I knew. I want him back and I will get him,’ she said.
‘You are dating Scot. What’s your problem?’
‘My problem is you get the best because Scot also loves you,’ she said and walked out.
I stared at the picture as it burned and I felt like my heart is also burning.
